Ulster Schools Track and Field Finals
The Antrim Forum on Friday evening/Saturday attracted record crowds for the annual Ulster Schools Track and Field finals. Over 5,000 competitors/coaches/spectators representing 140 schools enjoyed a an enjoyable and competitive days athletics where representing the school, gaining a podium position and qualification for the All ireland schools finals in two weeks time were a few of the objectives
Some excellent performances but weather was a problem with rain and wind AM and gusting wind and sunshine PM making it most challenging for the athletes and officials
Carrick Voc School Paul Donovan wins Senior Boys High Jump with abest of 1.80m in wet and windy conditions
Barry Quigg clears 1.70m for 2nd in the Inter Boys High Jump
Ciaran O'Leime puts the 6.25k shot to 11.06m for silver in the Senior Boys event
Aisling Doherty in the Junior Girls gets out to 9.09m for bronze in the Triple Jump
Killybegs Voc School Aislinn Cunningham wins Junior Girls 100m impressively -into a head wind haven qualifed early in the day with a 2nd palce in her semi final.Later she Long Jumped 4.99m -with the assistance of the wind for silver in the Long Jump
Abbey Voc School Karl Griffin wins the Junior Boys 800m impressively in an excellent time of 2mins 8.2 secs
Louise Harvey wins silver medals in the Inter 300m Hurdles and 80m Hurdles behind new sensation Christine McMahon who earlier this year was part of the Irih Senior 4 x 400m relay team a the European Indoors in Turin. On Friday evening when their sporting colleagues were enjoying the annual AVS awards night Christopher Doherty in the Inter Boys Pole Vault clears 3metres for silver, and Junior Girls Karen Tracey and Clare Brady finish 2nd and 3rd in the Junior Pole Vault
St Eunans, Letterkenny -Ruairi Finnigan is most impressive as he wins the Junior Boys 1,500m by nearly 50metre
Mark English Inter 800m and Darren McBrearty, Senior 800m are involved in two of the most closely fought finishes of the day. Both win silver medals with less than a body width between 1st and 2nd in both occasions Senior Boys Pauric McLaughlan,Steeplechase, Dan King ,5,000m and Inter Adam Friel, Steeplechase all earn silver medals
Loreto Letterkenny Lisa Shiels wins the Senior Girls 100m and finishes 2nd in the 200m.In two weeks time she wilwill be part of the Tir Chonaill team at the European Clubs in Slovakia. Cliodhna Timoney 42.3 secs, was 2nd in the Inter Girls 300m
St Columbas, Stranorlar had Mark Bonnar finish 2nd in the Inter Steeplechase
