Osaka Diary Number 11.
An evening of mixed fortunes. The good: the 6th place finish by
Eileen O Keeffe in the hammer; and the bad: the
devastation of Alastair Cragg in
the 5k.
Eileen got out a class early throw and made the final
8 and did herself so many favours hanging on to such a position. What
a step up, as prior to 2007 she had not really performed at the majors.
She needs to get stronger and believe in the ultimate and dream the dream
and hit it 12 months from now.
This was all happening and Alastair was
being wiped out in the 5k. I was there with Alastair in this situation
before in Goteborg and Birmingham. I will never forget Birmingham the
disappointment he felt and this was a repeat. Sure he cried,
sure he was depressed, but I walked him round and round
the warm up track and tried to deal with it as best one can and left
him finally with Mark Fountain the Australian 1500m lad with an Irish
background.
What do you say? Well that you believe in him and that you will
one day be with him at a major and he will succeed. So down is he,
that I found myself saying any day you can get up and get on with your
life is a good day, and that's tomorrow.
Tomorrow I hit the ground running at 5:30 to make my way to 20k walk
with Olive Loughnane and the 50k lads the next day.
Get back to you after the walks.
Looking forward to getting home now.
