Osaka Diary Number 9.
Day four 11th IAAF World Track and Field Championships continued with
more success for the Irish.
Once again an early start and first into action was European champion
David Gillick in the 400m. He ran his second best time ever 45-35 to
qualify for semis. Picture of David.
Paul Hession was an easy qualifier in the
200m in 20.46 easing down.
Finally Eileen O Keefe of Kilkenny in the
hammer needing 71-m for automatic qualification for Thursday's final gets
in a 71.07-m on the first throw and duly exits the stadium with the job
completed.
This evening local time Paul was back in the stadium for the 200m second
round and Derval O Rourke in the hurdles semi. Paul won
his 200m quarter in 20.50, but Derval failed to make final.
It was always going to be a defining day for Irish Athletics and the
question --- could we get 3 people across the line to progress to the next
stage? The answer soon came and it was a resounding yes
and Eileen in a major final; we took her out after
one round and she she faced a delighted Irish press.
When I dialled her mother and gave her the phone, her mother cried and
I heard her say do not be crying mam. It was a special moment, as on so
many occasions it's down to your family support and interest.
Big day
for Richard as Jena Pittman won gold and Bolt looked awesome in the
200m . Went out for dinner with the Sports Council Chairman John
Treacy and his group. They are highly chuffed with our championship
performances.
A lie on tomorrow morning and back to track in the evening. Time is
moving on now.
